We recommend you use Kayak.com to search for Hotels. The cheapest highly-rated option is The State Plaza Hotel near Dupont Circle is $116/night
For more affordable accommodations I would recommend that everyone look at hotels out near Dulles Intl (IAD). Dulles Intl has cheaper flights than Reagan Intl, is MUCH closer than Baltimore, and Hotels inside DC itself are very expensive.
Out near Dulles Intl they start as low as $60/night and most of them have a shuttle to-from the airport.
Use Kayak.com to search for rooms near the airport.
From the airport you have two shuttle/bus options for getting to DC.

The State Plaza Hotel near Dupont Circle is one of the most reasonable at $116/night
The 5A bus from Dulles to L'enfant Plaza Metro Station (middle of DC near mall) for only $3.10 one way. Downside is that it only runs once every two hours on weekends.

Washington Flyer Coach shuttle service to West Falls Church Metro Station for only $9 one way or $16 round trip. However this option also requires another 45 minutes on the Metro system in order to get to the center of DC.

If you REALLY want to stay on the cheap there are many Hostels in the DC area which have very good ratings and can house you for less than $40 for one night in dorms. Some require a minimum stay of two nights and ADVANCE RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL OF THEM.
